Food Safety Week

2015

The Council is urging people across the District to play their part in a fight against the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK as part of Food Safety Week 2015.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) estimates that around 280,000 people in the UK will be struck down by the food bug 'Campylobacter' this year. The most common cause is chicken and other poultry that is not cooked or handled properly. You can't see it, smell it or event taste it on food, but if it affects you, you won't forget it. At its worst, Campylobacter can kill or paralyse you.

The fight against Campylobacter will be at the centre of this year's Food Safety Week (18 - 22 May). The FSA wants to cut the number of cases of campylobacter poisoning in half by the end of 2015. If everyone does their bit, including industry and consumers this can happen. Pledging to take the Chicken Challenge and to do at least one thing to help keep tummies safe and healthy will make a huge difference in helping to achieve this goal.

To take the pledge, download recipes, and to be in with a chance of winning a five day course at Leiths School of Food and Wine (travel and accommodation included) visit the Chicken Challenge

Local authorities, all the major supermarkets and key partners are all working together to make sure people know how to stay safe. Advice is available at www.food.gov.uk/chicken
