The Council has a legal obligation to deal with stray dogs in the district. The Dog Control Service is currently provided by an external contract Dog Warden who will only collect stray dogs that have been contained. Unfortunately, the Council is no longer able to send officers to search for roaming stray dogs.
The Council’s Environmental Health Department will help you if you lose your dog, but please reduce the chance of your dog becoming lost by following the guidance below :-
• Ensure your dog can be identified with your name and address / telephone number on a collar and tag
• Make sure your dog is microchipped with the details of ownership and ensure this information is up to date
• Keep your dog it under your control when exercising it
• Check your property to make sure your dog cannot escape. Repair fences and close/lock gates.
The Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires dogs whilst on a public highway or in a public place, to wear a collar with sufficient identification of the owner inscribed on it and that failure to comply with this Order may lead to legal proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court and a fine of up to £1000.
The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015 requires all dogs which are older than 8 weeks to be microchipped and registered to an approved database unless they are a certified working dog for the purposes of section 6(3) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 or otherwise exempted from the microchipping requirement by a vet for certified health reasons
