The electoral registration system in Great Britain changed in 2014. The new system is called 'Individual Electoral Registration' (IER) and every individual is now responsible for their own voter registration, including if they change addresses.
How do I Register?
You can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
You will need to fill in your name, address and date of birth. You will also need your National Insurance number. This can usually be found on documents such as payslips, or letters about pensions, benefits or tax credits. Alternatively, you can go online at www.gov.uk/lost-national-insurance-number
Registering is a legal requirement that puts you on the electoral register. This enables you to:
- Vote at elections
- Apply for credit
After you Register
Completing the online registration starts the registration process. It doesn't instantly add you to the electoral register, but within a few days, you will be sent confirmation that you are on the register.
