For working age tenants, applications to provide help with the payment of rent will be made through Universal Credit and not Housing Benefit from November 2018. Tenants who are of pensionable age are not affected and will continue to be able to apply for Housing Benefit.
The vast majority of working age tenants will be affected by this change . The only current exceptions are:
Tenants who have more than 2 dependant children
Tenants in Supported Exempt Accommodation.
For tenants who are already in receipt of Housing Benefit, they will continue to claim Housing Benefit until there is a change in their circumstances, for example they return to work. Over the next few months we will be writing to all tenants potentially affected by the change to provide more information and some useful contact numbers.
