Take Care and Be Aware!

THINK: Be Aware Who You Scare

'Take Care and Be Aware' is about making sure that Halloween is a 'treat' for everyone and that you don't go out with a bang on Bonfire Night.

We want everyone to have fun over this celebratory period but it's important to remember that some people can find the unexpected knocks on doors and loud bangs scary and intimidating, especially some of the older members of our community.

This is why we are asking you to follow a few simple do's and don'ts over this fun and festive period. Visit the rest of the site to get your free downloads, advice, hotline number and find out what is being delivered in your area.

Happy Halloween and Bonfire Night!

Halloween

This Halloween make sure you remember to keep your 'trick or treating' a treat for everyone.

Halloween can be harmless fun but some members of the community may find the loud noises and knocks on their door quite scary, especially if they live alone. When you are out trick or treating remember that some of the older or more vulnerable members of your neighbourhood will find this night quite frightening.

Do's
  • Only visit houses where you or your friends know who lives there
  • Only visit areas where there are street lights - take a torch just in case
  • Stay in a group - don't split up and never go on your own
  • Always take care when crossing the road - make sure you can be seen

Don'ts

  • Don't knock if there's a sign saying 'No trick or treat'
  • Never enter someone's house - always stay on the doorstep
  • Be careful not to frighten elderly or vulnerable people
  • Never talk to strangers

Above all, don't get involved in things like criminal damage, throwing eggs and flour, violence, excessive alcohol or general nuisance behaviour. Anti-social behaviour like this is a crime and it will be reported.

Remember: If you see a 'No trick or treat' card in someone's window, don't knock!

Bonfire Night

Off out this Bonfire night? The bright lights and sparkling delights of Bonfire night are exciting for many members of the community. But for some, the loud bangs and large groups of people can be quite scary and very intimidating.

Need any advice or information about fireworks?

Don't know what's illegal on Bonfire night and what's not?

Get all your questions answered by calling the Staffordshire Firework's Hotline on 01785 277855 (available office hours, Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm)

Remember: Check the firework code and make sure you follow each step!

Do's

  • Follow the Firework Code
  • Think how your actions can affect others
  • Leave your pets at home
  • Attend an organised professional fireworks display

Don'ts

  • Don't set off noisy fireworks between 11pm and 7am (except in limited circumstances like Bonfire night itself, when the latest time is midnight)
  • Never throw fireworks
  • Don't buy fireworks for under 18s
